President Gotabaya Rajapaksa
is celebrating his 73rd birthday today. and the entire country is cursing
his birth due to the difficulties they face with his governing decisions.
They present
different numbers of the inflation percentages. But who feels it's better than
a Sri Lankan citizen? They elected the Gotabaya to power and expected better
political reforms. what did they get in return? the worst financial crisis in our
history. There is a massive shortage of food, fuel, and medicines. Now it's
been more than two months, and the situation is not getting better. The
reserves are running out against shortages.
The topic turned into
the IMF once again. A ten-member delegation of the International monetary fund
has arrived in Colombo, and they are talking about a bailout. The parliamentarians
are also trying to curtail the powers of president Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. On
Monday the cabinet passes the 21st amendment to the constitution. it's an
amendment that could reduce the Lankan presidency to a ceremonial position.
Once people called
him the “terminator” a leader who ruled with an iron fist. on his birthday
today, people call him a dead man walking. Gotabaya is nothing but a leader
losing his grip on power, courtesy of a new constitutional amendment.
This amendment would bring three big changes,
1- 1 - Enhance the
parliament’s role in governing Sri Lanka.
2- 2 -Empower the
Constitutional Council to make appointments earlier than the President of dark
power.
3 3 - Restrict the president’s
power to dismiss Cabinet members.
To put it simply, as
we mentioned earlier, this amendment reduces the Sri Lankan presidency to a
ceremonial position. Meanwhile, National
People’s Power (NPP) came up with much better
suggestions in favor of the country’s betterment.
However, it hasn't
been implemented yet. The 21st amendment has to be approved by the Sri Lankan
Parliament, with at least 2/3 of the parliamentarians needing to vote in its
favor. this is a major political reform in Sri Lanka. it comes at a time when
the IMF delegation is discussing a possible bailout. These talks are crucial as
Sri Lanka is days away from running out of fuel, and its foreign reserves are
nearly gone. Moreover, to pay back $5 billion of debt annually until 2026.
In such a situation Government
hopes the IMF visit will yield some dividends. Sri Lanka needs a bailout
desperately. public discontent is mounting, and thousands of citizens are on
the streets against this corrupted system. The global bodies are trying to
pitch in the United Nations has outlined a plan to raise 47 million in
assistance for the next four months. the world Food program is distributing
food vouchers to thousands of pregnant women in Sri Lanka.
the International
monetary fund says it wants to help assistance depending on how well government
executes the IMF's recommendations. Chief among them is renegotiating its
Chinese debts. now we know China is also providing financial aid to Sri Lanka.
but on that, there is no relief. China needs to extend debt repayment deadlines
or even reduced interest rates on loans.
These are the event briefings
marking President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s birthday.
