Former
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has accused the anti-government public
protests at the Galle Face Green, of murder.
Mahinda Rajapaksa made the accusation
in Parliament today during the vote of condolence on the murder of former MP
Amarakeerthi Athukorala. He said that even religious leaders in the
anti-government protests at the site were unable to prevent the violence that
occurred on 09 May.
The
former Prime Minister said the anti-government public protests cannot be
considered peaceful and that those involved in the protests have blood on their
hands.The late Amarakeerthi Athukorala had not done any wrong towards
the public protests.
Former
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is a very clever man to cover up things in
white. Peaceful anti-government protest sites at temple trees and Gall Face Green
were attacked by Mahinda Rajapaksa’s SLPP loyalists. Even evidence was found that
the Senior DIG Deshabandu Thennakoon supported the attack.
Then the
unrest broke out, late Amarakeerthi Athukorala had opened fire at the public
who had obstructed his vehicle in Nittambuwa, injuring people. Athukorala’s
gunfire killed one unarmed man and then He had later fled the area and had
sought refuge inside a building after being surrounded by the public. His death
was initially reported as a suicide, but the death of the MP was later confirmed
as murder.
That’s the
truth behind Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s false statement. He is
directly responsible for the 9th May unrest, which was started from his office
by his supporters. His actions took not only the life of MP Amarakeerthi
Athukorala but also several civilians.

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka today decided to suspend the
presidential pardon that had been granted to former Parliamentarian Duminda
Silva. The order was issued after the court heard two petitions that had been
filed by former MP Hirunika Premachandra and her mother Swarna Premachandra
challenging the presidential pardon granted to Silva.
The Colombo High Court imprisoned Silva for life in 2016, over the
murder of former MP Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, the father of former MP
Hirunika Premachandra.
Silva had filed an appeal at the
Supreme Court against the decision of the Colombo High Court. However, the
Supreme Court upheld the verdict on the murder conviction by the High Court.
Thereafter, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa granted a special
Presidential pardon to Duminda Silva on 24th June 2021. After his release from
prison, Silva was appointed as the Chairman of the National Housing Development
Authority in August.
With the pardon cancellation, The Supreme Court also ordered a
travel ban on Duminda Silva and called for his passport to be impounded. The
criminal investigation department (CID) is to arrest Duminda Silva. He was
spotted at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) earlier this month with
many reports claiming that he had left the country. However, it is yet to be
confirmed if he had returned or not.

Shashi Weerawansa was sentenced to
Two-Years imprisonment due to the use of forged documents to obtain a passport.
The victim is the wife of former Cabinet Minister Wimal Weerawansa. The Colombo
Magistrate’s Court also imposed a fine of Rs 100,000 on Shashi Weerawansa when
the case in this regard was taken up for hearing today.
Weerawansa is accused of fraudulently
obtaining two passports, including a diplomatic passport, by submitting forged
documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
Weerawansa, who had submitted
documents with forged names and dates of birth to obtain the passports, was
initially arrested in February 2015 and later released on bail. Thereafter,
in July 2020, the Colombo Chief Magistrate issued a warrant on Shashi
Weerawansa.

Journalist, YouTuber, and political vlogger Darshana Hadungoda has been summoned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) unofficially without properly written documents.
His YouTube channel SL Deshaya is known for political
commentary. He has declined to give a statement, claiming that the
police never sent him an official notification calling him in for questioning.
No reason for the summons was communicated to him in writing either, he said.
He speaks for system change and against corrupted politicians.
most importantly he is directly criticizing politically biased corrupted media companies. He speaks against wrong media
practices for commercial benefits.
“I did not get an official written notification from the
CID to summon me for questioning. No legal document was
provided. They just gave a call and told me to come,” Handungoda addressed reporters
at CID premises on Wednesday.
Lawyers representing Handungoda said a letter was handed
over to the CID asking for an official document mentioning the reasons.
“This only demonstrates one thing and that is that the
whole system is politicized. The police have also been politicized. It is bad
to bring ordinary, unarmed citizens like us to these places to fulfill
someone’s personal agenda,” said Handungoda.

The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) and The Airline Pilots’ Guild of Sri Lanka (ALPGSL) today denied the statement made by SLPP MP Arundhika Fernando that he has served as a pilot. SLAF further emphasizes that MP Arundhika has not even served as a cadet officer.
SLPP MP Arundika Fernando recently
stated at the parliament that he served as a pilot. He further stated to parliament
that "I have nothing to show today that I was in the Air Force and Sri Lankan
Airlines. In those days, when a flight took off, they were recorded in
logs because there was no facility to computerize at that time. All those
logs were destroyed by the fire that broke out in my house,".
According to him, several important
documents including flying logs of SLAF were destroyed due to the mob setting
fire to his house during the recent violence that began from the prime minister’s
office.
But Authorities must have clear
records. Therefore, Polito News contacted the SLAF, and its Spokesman Group
Captain Dushan Wijesinghe said that there were no records that the MP had ever
served in the SLAF. The spokesman further said the MP had once attended
the Flying Aptitude Test in which he failed.
The Airline Pilots’ Guild of Sri
Lanka (ALPGSL) made a clear statement as well. They have categorically denied
the MPs’ claim of him having been a Pilot in its fraternity and further went on
to say that the organization has no record of him being a Pilot for the
National career.
The ALPGSL says that it had to issue
a statement due to numerous queries directed at the organization regarding the
MP’s statement.

President of Sri Lanka Bar Association (BASL) Saliya Peiris has stated
the IGP had assured when he and BASL Deputy President Anura Maddagoda met with
the IGP and a group of senior officers in charge of the CID on Monday at Police
Headquarters at the IGP’s invitation.
Saliya Peiris further said, “Over the last few days,
representations were made by the BASL at the Attorney General and the IGP on
the attacks on the protestors and on the violence which occurred thereafter. We
were informed by these officers that in the next two days a number of arrests
will be made in respect of the attacks on the protests opposite Temple Trees
and at Galle Face,”
BASL President said he pointed out to the IGP and the senior
officers of the CID the importance of maintaining public confidence in the
investigations by taking prompt and effective action on matters.

protesting sites in both Temple Trees and Gall Face by the Criminal
Investigation Department.
Attorney
General had instructed (CID) to arrest leading SLPP loyalists MPs Johnston
Fernando, Sanath Nishantha, Milan Jayathilake, and some supporting thugs such
as Dan Priyasad.
Sufficient evidence was received against Dan
Priyasad by spotting him among SLPP loyalist attackers.
Moratuwa
Mayor Saman Lal Fernando, Seethawakapura PS Chairman Jayantha Rohana, and
Kelaniya PS member Manjula Prasanna have also been arrested along with Dan
Priyasad.
It is high time to stop unpleasant political practices and bring gentleness to power. Choosing such quality politicians among newcomers is no easy task. Some politicians have a proven track record of well practicing the opportunity they received to enter the parliament. Anura Dissanayaka and NPP parliamentarians led with a better example.
Then attackers advanced to the Galle Face Green, where protesters calling for the resignation of the government have been peacefully camped for several weeks. Witness accounts and video footage show government supporters attacking the protesters with clubs and other weapons and setting fire to tents. Hours later, Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned as prime minister.

Sources say that the CID has informed President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa that there is enough evidence to arrest SSP K.B. Keerthiratne who was in charge of the Kegalle division.
SSP Keerthiratne had ordered the firing to disperse a public protest in Rambukkana on April 19. One person was killed and three others were seriously injured and are still receiving treatment in hospital. More than 20 people were seriously injured.
Sources say that the CID has informed the President that there is enough evidence to arrest the SSP based on eyewitness and video evidence received so far regarding the incident.
The public has also criticized the police for not arresting any police officers in connection with the murder except for the transfer of three persons including Keerthiratne. In particular, the fact that SSP Keerthiratne is a close relative of Mahinda Rajapaksa’s Chief Security Officer has further intensified the current anti – Rajapaksa sentiment in the country.
Shooting these protesters has also attracted international attention and the government is being pressured internationally. Sources said that the Sri Lankan government, which is at risk of a severe dollar crisis as well as an impending food shortage, risks not receiving the much-needed international humanitarian assistance to the country in the next moment if all efforts are made to rescue these police officers.
The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) today (22) summoned the IGP to inquire into the shooting death of a person at the Rambukkana protest and the death of one person as well as several others.
The Human Rights Commission has appointed a three-member committee to investigate the incident and the committee had summoned the IGP and several other police officers.

government, questioning the investigation into the bombings.

than a hundred thousand participated in the protest and march from St Sebastian
Church to the Negombo Bus stand. Along with Reverent Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith,
many catholic priests and Buddhist monks participated in the event with prayers
for the Easter Sunday victims.

The Police report(B) submitted to the Kegalle Magistrate Court on the shooting at Rambukkana yesterday (19) to disperse a public protest has strongly been opposed.
Accordingly, the Magistrate was conducting an
on-site probe with the relevant officers from around 2 pm today until the
evening. Reports said that the residents of the area have shown blood stains on
road about half a kilometre away from the place in which the terror had
occurred.
Accusations are being levelled against the
Police that the blood stains near the shooting location have been washed away.
The Police were also said to be embarrassed as
they were unable to produce a firm statement before the Court, especially in
terms of corroborating the story with what the Police Media Spokesperson, the
Senior Police Spokesperson, the Inspector General of Police and the Minister in
Charge of the Police had produced to the media.
