It is shocking news that the report was released to the media yesterday by Christian Skoog, UNICEF's Representative in Sri Lanka. In the last few months, Sri Lanka has become the 7th country in the world with the highest number of malnourished children. Also, you may not know that Sri Lanka is the second most malnourished country in Asia.
The assessment is that it is not far off that the country will become the 3rd or 4th most malnourished country in the world in most respects. By the end of next month, these reckless rulers will probably make Sri Lanka the number one country in Asia suffering from childhood malnutrition. Such a country was once well known as the granary of the East.
UNICEF reports that 5.7 million people in Sri Lanka, including 1.7 million children, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. UNICEF Local Representative reports that children and marginalized people, especially those living below the poverty line, are particularly affected by the shortage of life-saving drugs, rising food and fuel prices, and so on, as a result of the economic downturn.
Unicef estimates that two out of every five children in Sri Lanka do not meet their minimum food requirements. Food inflation is projected to reach 70% by August.
The UNICEF report also shows that 70% of Sri Lankan households have significantly reduced their food needs. They have so far requested $ 25.3 million in emergency assistance from the world to protect the lives of children in Sri Lanka and cover their nutritional needs.
The report also notes that children are more likely to be exposed to violence and stress as a result of parental loss of income, job loss, or uncertainty. The UNICEF report also points out that school closures, the Internet, and other disruptions could exacerbate the current economic crisis.
You think about it. Children are our future. This is what our next generation is losing. But Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Rajapaksa's cunning bodyguard, is trying to take the time to implement his agenda by tackling the burning issues in the country. The pampering he said before he came to power has now been withdrawn.
The Rajapaksas, hiding in bunkers, are gradually peeping out to regain their power. The danger of the whole country becoming a battlefield in a few more days is looming before us due to the vicious rule of the people.
Our expenditures would be higher in the future for every hour that we procrastinate to oust these wicked rulers. Aren't we already too late? Let us take the lead in overthrowing these miserable, corrupt rulers and creating a people's government. Let's launch the second revolution to save the motherland immediately.
