Shashi Weerawansa was sentenced to
Two-Years imprisonment due to the use of forged documents to obtain a passport.
The victim is the wife of former Cabinet Minister Wimal Weerawansa. The Colombo
Magistrate’s Court also imposed a fine of Rs 100,000 on Shashi Weerawansa when
the case in this regard was taken up for hearing today.
Weerawansa is accused of fraudulently
obtaining two passports, including a diplomatic passport, by submitting forged
documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
Weerawansa, who had submitted
documents with forged names and dates of birth to obtain the passports, was
initially arrested in February 2015 and later released on bail. Thereafter,
in July 2020, the Colombo Chief Magistrate issued a warrant on Shashi
Weerawansa.
Wow, factor in the Sri Lankan justice system that all political companions get five-star facilities in prison. By acquiring a medical report from the Jail’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Imprisoned political companions are allowed to stay in the Jail Hospital with all facilities.
Not only Shashi Weerawansa but her husband, former cabinet minister Wimal Weerawansa also should bring to justice for abusing his official powers and support. That’s how System change can be imposed.
