The Caucasian Chalk Circle begins with a Prologue that deals with a dispute over a valley. Two groups of peasants want to claim an abandoned valley. One group used to live in the valley and herded goats there. The other group is from a neighboring valley and hopes to plant fruit trees. The Delegate started telling a story to arbitrate the dispute.
“Grusha”, a
kitchen maid of grand duke’s family, has engaged to a state soldier called
Simon. During the coup, she has infant “Michael” handed to her. She saved the
child from the fat Prince and his soldiers. She then takes Michael with her and
flees the city to her brother’s place. Then she and the child had to cross an
old cable bridge under dense weather conditions to escape from the fat prince
and his soldiers. After spending most of her money and risking her life for the
child, she arrived at her brother's house and spent the winter.
When spring
arrives, Grusha's brother forces her to marry a wealthy dying man. They hold a
wedding, and by the time the war is over, the Grand Duke has raised an army and
returned. Grusha is now stuck with a husband she did not want and forced to
become a good wife to him.
One day Simon
returns and learns that she is married. He is even more upset when he sees
Michael, whom he thinks is Grusha's child. Some soldiers soon arrive and took
Michael away from her, claiming that Michael belongs to the Governor's wife.
Grusha followed them back to the city.
Grusha wants to
keep the child. Even Simon goes to the trial and promises “Grusha” that he will
support her. After hearing all the arguments and learning about what “Grusha”
has done to take care of the child. The Judge orders a Chalk Circle to be
drawn. He places the child in the middle and asks the two women to pull him,
saying that whichever woman can pull the child out of the circle will get him.
The Governor's
wife pulls whereas Grusha lets go. The judge then gives Michael to Grusha and
orders the Governor's wife to leave. He confiscates Michael's estates and makes
them into public gardens. His last act is to divorce Grusha, thereby allowing
her to marry Simon.
Above story briefing
about The Caucasian
Chalk Circle for those who are not familiar
with the famous play.
Prime
Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe stated that he took a risky challenge just like “Grusha”
who Crossed an old cable bridge under dense weather
conditions for someone’s child.
According to Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe’s example, Who is the Child? This country cannot be someone’s child. It’s supposed to be taken care of as a mother. So, the child is “Namal Rajapaksa” Son of Mahinda Rajapaksa.
In the known past, we can remember how Mahinda
Rajapaksa Protected Ranil Wickramasinghe during unrest against his leadership of
the United National Party. Not only that, favorable actions upon Central Bank
matter, and lot more there to bring into the spotlight.
The marriage
between old dying “Gota” and “Ranil Grusha” is done already. Father expects
Ranil Wickramasinghe to deliver the child to a safe destination.
We leave you to
link the dots of this story and build your comparison. But something for sure
is that they look after each other and never take action for this country's
betterment.
