Human rights organization Amnesty International has launched a
campaign to draw attention to the lack of accountability surrounding the murder
of Sri Lankan journalist Lasantha Wickremetunge.
Wickremetunge, who was the Editor of The Sunday Leader, was killed in January 2009 when he was ambushed by unknown attackers on a motorcycle while on his way to work.
The Amnesty International campaign aims to highlight the lack of progress made in holding those responsible for the crime accountable for their actions. As part of the campaign, the organization has shared a timeline of the developments and lack of accountability surrounding the incident.
Many journalists and human rights activists in Sri Lanka have long called for justice to be served in the case, as it remains unsolved more than a decade after the murder. The Amnesty International campaign hopes to renew public attention to the case and the ongoing struggle for accountability.
The Sri Lankan government has faced criticism from both domestic and international groups for its lack of progress in investigating and prosecuting those responsible for the murder of Wickremetunge and other journalists in the country. The government has repeatedly pledged to take action on the issue, but progress has been slow, and many concerns remain unresolved.
