Over 50 individuals, including the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) convener, Wasantha Mudalige, were arrested on Monday for forcefully entering the Education Ministry in Battaramulla. The group, which consisted of 30 student monks from the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, had staged a protest and entered the Ministry, demanding the reopening of their university in Pitipana, Homagama.
The protesters also demanded that the Police take action against the use of tear gas and water cannons to disperse their Sathyagraha, a peaceful demonstration held on Sunday (22). The Vice Chancellor of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, Venerable (Prof) Neluwe Sumanawansa Thero, announced earlier today (23) that the university will only be open to first-year students starting from February 27, 2023.
Venerable Thero stated that the Administrative Board had advised the university's reopening in phases, as it was not feasible to reopen the institution for all students at once. The protest follows the university's announcement of its phased reopening, which caused unrest among the student community.
