POLICE USE TEAR GAS TO BREAK UP AN NPP DEMONSTRATION (LIVE)

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse a group of protestors affiliated with the National People's Power (NPP) party at the Ibbanwala Junction near Town Hall earlier today.
According to eyewitnesses, the protestors had gathered to demonstrate against recent government policies, including the increase in fuel prices and the rising cost of living.
The police responded to the protest by using tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd. The situation quickly turned chaotic as protestors and police clashed, resulting in injuries and arrests.
The NPP has been critical of the government's economic policies, which they claim have caused hardship for the working class and marginalized communities. The protest today was just one of many demonstrations organized by opposition parties and civil society groups in recent weeks.
The police have defended their actions, stating that they were necessary to maintain law and order and prevent the situation from escalating further. However, the use of force has been criticized by some as an infringement on the right to peaceful protest.
The incident has once again highlighted the ongoing tension between the government and opposition parties over economic policies and the impact they are having on the country's citizens.

SHAVENDRA IS BLAMED BY THE INVESTIGATION FOR FAILING TO STOP THE VIOLENCE ON MAY 9

A three-member committee headed by Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda has found that Chief of Defence Staff and former Commander of the Army, Shavendra Silva, neglected his duties in not taking necessary action to prevent violence that took place in the country on the 9th and 10th of May last year, according to Hiru News.

The committee, which comprised Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda, General Daya Rathnayake, and Marshal of the Air Force Roshan Gunathilake, was appointed by former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to inquire into the May 9th incidents.

The committee's recommendations were presented at the Court of Appeal when a petition filed by a group of MPs requesting legal action be taken against several officials, including Shavendra Silva and the IGP, for not taking actions to prevent damages to their properties, was taken for hearing on the 24th of March.

The committee has recommended that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) launch an inquiry against the Chief of Defence Staff, Shavendra Silva. The findings of the committee have further intensified the scrutiny on Silva, who has been accused of committing war crimes during the final stages of the country's civil war.

The allegations against Silva have drawn international criticism, and several countries have imposed travel bans and asset freezes on him. The latest development is likely to add further pressure on the Sri Lankan government to address these allegations and take appropriate action.

https://youtu.be/uc6uHZC1CcE

Over 50 individuals, including the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) convener, Wasantha Mudalige, were arrested on Monday for forcefully entering the Education Ministry in Battaramulla. The group, which consisted of 30 student monks from the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, had staged a protest and entered the Ministry, demanding the reopening of their university in Pitipana, Homagama.

The protesters also demanded that the Police take action against the use of tear gas and water cannons to disperse their Sathyagraha, a peaceful demonstration held on Sunday (22). The Vice Chancellor of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, Venerable (Prof) Neluwe Sumanawansa Thero, announced earlier today (23) that the university will only be open to first-year students starting from February 27, 2023.

Venerable Thero stated that the Administrative Board had advised the university's reopening in phases, as it was not feasible to reopen the institution for all students at once. The protest follows the university's announcement of its phased reopening, which caused unrest among the student community.

SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVIST SEPAL WAS FREED FOLLOWING AN UNQUALIFIED APOLOGY

Social media activist Sepal Amarasinghe has been released from the Colombo Magistrate's Court after issuing an unconditional apology for defaming the Temple of Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy. The decision to conclude the case pertaining to his arrest for defamation was announced after the case was taken up for hearing before Colombo Magistrate Prasanna Alwis.

During the hearing, Amarasinghe's lawyer informed the court that his client unconditionally apologized to the Mahanayake Theros and the followers of Buddhism for his actions. Representing the complainants, Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris informed the court that the case could be concluded if such an apology was issued.

A group of Buddhist monks was present during the court hearing and accepted Amarasinghe's apology, after which the court decided to conclude the case. Amarasinghe was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on 5th January after making several controversial statements about Sri Dalada Maligawa on his yyoutube channel.

His arrest came after the Mahanayake Theros of the Malwathu and Asgiriya sectors drew President Ranil Wickremesinghe's attention to the matter, urging him to take necessary action. The Mahanayake Theros stated in a joint letter to the President that the video footage circulated on social media platforms by Amarasinghe contained statements offensive to Buddhism, causing harm to the religion and the historic 'Sri Dalada Maligawa'.

FACTUM PERSPECTIVE: THE PROCESS OF SRI LANKA'S INDEPENDENCE

In 1918, Ceylon's Legislative Council member George Wille cited an interesting metaphor to describe the growing weariness among the Ceylonese about the lack of political rights, despite being tied to Britain for over a century. Speaking at the second reform conference organized by the Ceylon Reform League and Ceylon National Association, Wille compared the nation of Ceylon to a stepson under the care of "a kind, but not a very progressive parent - a parent who has got very many children of his own to look after, in preference to his stepchildren." The resolution proposed by Sinhalese politician James Peiris called for the vigorous development of self-government institutions in the country as the basis for the realization of responsible government as an integral part of the British Empire. The resolution sought a greater opportunity for the people to exercise their political rights.

Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam, the President of the Reform League, argued that in Ceylon, the British merchant and the planter exercised too great an influence over public policy and measures. Decades of stagnation on the political front led to growing advocacy for more political rights, and the setting up of the Ceylon Reform League and the Ceylon National Association in 1917, giving impetus to the push for constitutional reforms. The setting up of the Ceylon National Congress in 1919 further galvanized calls for more political autonomy for the country. Infighting between high-profile members within the Congress delayed progress, with sharp differences on important issues such as the granting of universal suffrage for citizens.

Constitutional reforms to replace the Legislative Council came following the setting up of the Donoughmore Commission, with elections to the first State Council held in 1931. Two leading advocates of political autonomy, D. B. Jayatilaka and D. S. Senanayake, dominated the Council. With universal suffrage introduced between 1928 and 1931, leftist parties made inroads into the political arena. Among those elected to the Second State Council were the leading figures of the Marxist Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), N. M. Perera, and Philip Gunawardena.

The final phase of transfer of power that granted Dominion Status to the country was dominated by D. S. Senanayake, who became Sri Lanka's first Prime Minister. D. S. appointed two of the country's leading lawyers, L. M. D de Silva and H. V. Perera, as his local advisers to assist him in negotiations for the transfer of power.
